How to calculate pipe volume in liters
Calculate how many liters a full pipe holds from its inside diameter and length, with worked examples and a liters-per-meter table.

What the calculation represents
A completely full circular pipe is a long cylinder. Use its actual inside diameter and usable length, not the nominal size or outside diameter.
V = π × (inside diameter ÷ 2)² × length

A practical workflow
- Confirm that the pipe is circular and that you need its completely full capacity; a partly full line requires a different method.
- Find the actual inside diameter. If only a reliable outside diameter and wall thickness are available, use inside diameter = outside diameter − 2 × wall thickness.
- Convert inside diameter to millimeters and length to meters, then apply the practical formula without rounding intermediate values.
- Cross-check the answer against liters per meter and multiply that value by the effective pipe length.
Worked example
A pipe with a 2-inch inside diameter over 10 feet holds approximately 6.18 liters.
Reading the answer correctly
DN, NPS, and trade size do not guarantee the inside diameter. A partly full pipe requires circular-segment geometry.
Diameter is squared, so a modest difference between nominal size and actual bore can materially change capacity. The table is a useful check, but the final calculation should use the manufacturer’s documented inside diameter.
Practical formula for millimeters and meters
With inside diameter in millimeters and length in meters, the divisor 4,000 includes the conversion to liters. Setting length to 1 m in the same relation gives liters per meter.
For a 100 mm bore over 10 m, π × 100² × 10 ÷ 4,000 = 78.54 L. In imperial units, a 2-inch inside diameter over 10 feet holds approximately 6.18 L.

The table uses exact inside diameters. Do not substitute DN, NPS, or trade size without consulting the product data because bore changes with material and wall schedule.

What this guide does not calculate
A partly full pipe requires circular-segment area: the percentage of liquid depth is not the same as the percentage of volume.
Flow rate, pressure, head loss, and hydraulic sizing depend on additional variables and are outside this static-capacity calculation.
Checks before relying on the number
- The diameter is the actual bore, not outside diameter, DN, NPS, or another trade designation.
- Length covers only the section being evaluated and does not count fittings twice.
- Diameter and length have been converted to the units required by the selected formula.
- The answer is static volume and is not described as flow rate, pressure, or hydraulic design capacity.
Record inside diameter, effective length, and liters per meter with the answer so it can be revised when material or wall schedule changes.
