How to calculate tank capacity in liters
Choose the tank shape, measure the inside and estimate geometric capacity.
What the calculation represents
Tank capacity starts with the actual body shape and inside working dimensions. A safe operating level may be well below the physical top.

A practical workflow
- Identify whether the tank is rectangular, upright cylindrical, horizontal or assembled from a straight body and shaped ends.
- Measure inside dimensions and maximum working level; use documented wall thickness when only outside dimensions are available.
- Calculate each geometric section, sum gross volume and apply the service-specific maximum fill limit.
- Cross-check against the nameplate, strapping chart, level gauge or a metered fill before using the number for inventory.
Worked example
A cylindrical tank with a 2 ft inside radius and 5 ft liquid height holds about 1,779 liters geometrically; operational limits may reduce that figure.
Reading the answer correctly
A fill limit is a percentage of volume, not automatically the same percentage of height in a horizontal tank. Pressurized, fuel and chemical tanks require manufacturer data.
Geometric volume describes the inside envelope; working and inventory volumes depend on authorized level and heel. A tank chart maps level to gallons or liters more accurately than a linear percentage.
Choose the tank shape before calculating
A rectangular tank uses inside length, width, and height. An upright cylindrical tank, drum, or cistern uses inside radius and working height. Identify the body before entering measurements.
A full horizontal cylinder has the same total capacity as an upright cylinder, but partial fill needs circular-segment geometry. Split a compound tank into its straight body, heads, neck, and other verifiable sections.
This geometric estimate does not replace a strapping chart or service documentation for fuel, pressure, or chemical storage.
Checks before relying on the number
- A partly filled horizontal cylinder is not estimated by applying liquid-height percentage directly to full capacity.
- Domed heads, cone bottoms, necks and non-drainable piping are handled as separate sections.
- Thermal expansion and safety headspace come from documentation rather than a universal allowance.
- Fuel, chemical and pressure service follows manufacturer data and applicable regulatory requirements.
