How many liters does a bathtub hold?

What the calculation represents

Maximum tub capacity is not the same as water used per bath. Sloped sides, overflow height and the bather’s displacement make a large difference.

A practical workflow

  1. Measure inside length and width across the water area and depth to a realistic bathing level below the overflow.
  2. Use lower and upper cross-sections to form a range because sloped sides make a simple box overstate capacity.
  3. Allow for bather displacement or read the water meter before and after the actual bath fill when consumption is the goal; an empty-tub fill does not include that displacement.
  4. Without a usable meter, multiply a measured faucet flow rate by fill time and include both hot and cold supply.

Worked example

A 60 × 30 × 18 inch rectangular envelope is about 531 liters, while a shaped tub filled below the overflow may use only 40–50 US gallons.

Reading the answer correctly

For conservation planning, meter readings or a timed flow-rate test are more dependable than outside tub dimensions.

Geometry provides a range because tub shells curve and taper. For conservation, a meter difference directly measures supplied water; it reflects bather displacement only when it covers the real bath filled to its final level with the person in the tub.

Checks before relying on the number

  • Outside shell, deck and rim dimensions are excluded from the water calculation.
  • The selected level remains below the overflow and matches normal use.
  • Empty-tub capacity, water with a bather and total water consumed are labeled separately.
  • Flow rate is measured with a known container and repeated rather than taken from a nominal fixture rating.
