How to calculate rectangular container volume
A practical formula and worked example for boxes, tanks and rectangular containers.
What the calculation represents
For a straight-sided box or tank, inside length, width and height define the available space. US measurements can stay in inches, but the cubic-inch result must be multiplied by 0.016387064 to obtain liters.

A practical workflow
- Decide whether the job needs geometric volume or working capacity, then mark the actual fill line before measuring.
- Measure inside length, width and height. If a tote tapers, take dimensions near the base and rim and treat the result as a range.
- Keep all three measurements in one system; cubic inches may be converted with 1 in³ = 0.016387064 L.
- Calculate the box volume first, then list molded corners, fittings and required headspace as separate allowances.
Worked example
A storage tote measuring 24 × 12 × 15 inches inside has a volume of 4,320 in³, or about 70.8 liters. That figure is more useful for sizing than its advertised outside dimensions.
Reading the answer correctly
Tapered walls and molded corners are common in household containers, so treat a simple box result as an upper estimate.
A box calculation is an upper bound for most storage totes and rotationally molded tanks. Compare it with a rated net capacity or a measured fill when container selection depends on a close fit.
Checks before relying on the number
- The tape spans the inside faces rather than the advertised outside dimensions.
- Height stops at the working fill line, not automatically at the lid or top rim.
- Feet and inches have been standardized before multiplication and the intermediate unit is cubic.
- Repeating the narrowest measurement catches a small error that can affect every subsequent estimate.
