How to measure the volume of irregular objects
Use water displacement when a simple geometric formula is not available.
What the calculation represents
Water displacement works when an irregular object can be fully submerged without absorbing, dissolving or reacting with the liquid.

A practical workflow
- Choose a graduated vessel large enough for full immersion but with graduations small relative to the expected displacement.
- Read the initial level at eye height, using the bottom of the water meniscus where appropriate.
- Submerge the object completely without touching the vessel, remove trapped air and record the final level.
- Subtract the initial reading; with an overflow can, measure the collected liquid instead of the level change.
Worked example
If a graduated container rises from 1.20 L to 1.68 L, the submerged object occupies 0.48 L, or 480 cm³.
Reading the answer correctly
Air pockets and support hardware also displace water, so remove bubbles and use the thinnest practical suspension line.
Uncertainty from both level readings affects the difference. If each mark is readable only to ±5 mL, a small displacement cannot support decimal-milliliter precision; measuring several identical parts together can help.
Checks before relying on the number
- The object does not absorb, dissolve, react with the liquid or float beyond controlled restraint.
- Thread, tongs or a basket have negligible displacement or are corrected by a blank measurement.
- Cavities are free of air and the entire target volume is below the surface.
- Both readings use the same scale and no extra precision is claimed beyond the graduations.
